-Ed Orman's Drive-in grocery on Hampton Road across from Lida Hooe. Ed ran the place.

-Halbert's Riding Stable near Mountain Creek Lake

-Motorcycle Hill on Loop 12 - actually a nice group of hills at the southwest edge of the Mountain Creek Escarpment. There was also a very nice flat track in one of the flat areas on top as you went South towards where Mt View Kollege is now.

-Dairy Queen on Hampton Road

-Wee St Andrews Miniature Golf Course on Beckley

-Minuature golf course in Cockrell Hill

-Zang Bowling Alley with a very nice pinball game area with machines that you abuse a lot (tilt) to keep the ball in play

-Oak Cliff Rats

-Snow cone stand at Clarendon and Superior

-Edward's Hamburgers at Clarendon and Superior

-Wyatts grocery store on Fort Worth Avenue and Hampton with Tupinamba just across the street. There was a Skillens Drugs Store on the corner with soda fountain that made a great cheeseburger. Most all drug stores had a soda fountain log ago, I guess. There was one at Page Drug Store in the Heights Shopping Center too that someone just told me about that I didn't remember.

-That black 51 Merc with the chopped roof with purple tail lights with some furry guys inside. They would chase you if you yelled obscenities at them. It could have been a different year than that - I was always running away from it, so I'm not really sure.

-Bronco Bowl on Fort Worth Avenue - demolished in 2004.

-Virgin pins and a white sport coat with a pink white carnation. There's nothing on the Net about virgins pins; it could have been a local fad.

-DA haircut

-LuAnns on Greenville

-Tastee-Freez at Ravina and Clarendon

-Hobby shop at Ravina and Clarendon

-Big Sears store on Jefferson that was always hopping and had a very nice candy counter - demolished. The address was 611 W. Jefferson. Someone just told me that. I don't know how they remembered that.

-Polar Bear ice cream store across the street from Lake Cliff Park

-Skillern's Drug Stores - Hampton and Clarendon - Edgefield and Davis - Westmoreland and Clarendon - Fort Worth Avenue and Hampton with those Big Shakes

-Sunset Pharmacy with a real soda fountain - best Cherry Coke I ever had. Store was operated by Mr. Martin

-Boundary Pharmacy at Jefferson and Marlborough... see discussion...we're looking for pixes. Just East up Jefferson was an A&P, an Army Surplus Story, a Grilled System burger place and a 7-11. There was a variety store across the street from the Boundary Pharmacy. It could have been an ME Moses, but I really don't remember. It seems that there were two gas stations across the street - a Gulf station on one corner and a Humble on the other.

-Coghill-Simmons record store at Edgefield and Davis with listening rooms even. Much later in my life I met a gentleman that worked there and he was the one that would let us play anything we wanted for as long as we desired. His name was Morris and he was very kind. He played the piano like you would not believe.

-Cannon's Variety Store at Edgefield and Davis

-A&P Grocery Store at Edgefield and Davis with Schlinder's Bakery right next door

-Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle - I never saw one but anyone who ever owned one was supposed to have been killed riding it, uh, the model with two 500cc engines that was supposed to run 150mph.

-Smell of sulfur from those chemistry classes

-Roller Coaster Hill

-That bison head that talked to us...I always thought the voice could have been Mr. Griffin tricking us. I recently found out that it wasn't Mr. Griffin.

-Red Bryan's on Jefferson

-Austin's Barbeque (Bull Pen)at Illinois and Hampton Road. Go here for pix:

Central Expressway in 1962

http://www.texasfreeway.com/dallas/historic/photos/images/us75_central_typical_6_1962.jpg

Some downtown theaters:

Majestic, Palace (with a kool organ rising up out of the floor), Tower, Rialto, Capitol, and Melba. In 1955 there was a protest against segregated seating at the Melba Theater. That's sounds like a very weird thing for Moat City. The interior architecture of many of these was striking, huh?

Some classes we should have had in skool:

AC/DC circuits

Basic psychology and sociology

Early adolescent behavior

Good manners

Study habits

When to be quiet
